Winter is quickly approaching but there are some things you can do now in the mild weather to prepare your home's exterior for the harsh winter months. A few tips include cleaning the exterior window glass. The glass will streak in cold weather so wash the windows before the hard cold sets in. Inspect and caulk any areas around doors, windows, patio's, foundation and driveways. This can help with cold air entering the home as well as stop further cracking in concrete areas. Make sure downspouts and gutters are clear of leaves and debris. Also be sure to have gutter downspout drains at least 6 feet from the house to prevent water in the lower level of your home. Get your fireplace cleaned and inspected if applicable. Remove any outdoor hoses attached to the house to prevent freezing and breaking of pipes. Another tip is to check your attic insulation for proper depth and distribution. All of these tips can help you stay warmer and safer in the coming winter.
